Communications Services

Overview
Communications Services spans Network Protocols to Network Management. In ISO 7 layer model terms, this would be layers 2 to 7. Communications Services is the software end of the Communications industry. It is the area where Information Technology and Communications Technology most closely overlap and synergise.

Collaboration is a process by which people work together on an intellectual, academic or practical endeavour. Tele-collaboration connects individuals via the Internet, or some other means of telecommunication, using tools such as email, www browsing or some purpose designed application. Internet-based work allows collaborators to communicate anytime, from anywhere to any place. People from different parts of a building, state, country, or continent can exchange information, collaborate on shared documents and ideas, study together, or reflect on their own practices.

Research Projects
The group is engaged in research addressing the educational implications of an ultra-broadband network that has the potential to revolutionise the delivery of online teaching.
CeNTIE Telecollaboration
Technologies for tele-collaboration and distance education have long been promising to reduce the need for travel and improve the accessibility of teachers. Technologies for tele-collaboration and distance education will be developed, based on the existing virtual classroom at UNSW, the CSIRO tele-lecture theatres and UTS activities.

Management of Complex Networks
This project is made up of 3 primary strands:
  • Network Simulation
  • Policy Definition, Construction & Management
  • Policy/Network Integration
