Memorial Service of Professor Hughes

A memorial service to celebrate John's life and achievements was held on Wednesday 17 May 2006 in the Great Hall. Members of John's family were there to confer the honorary degree.

Professor Ross Milbourne opens the proceedings of the service followed by the Award of Doctor of the University (honoris causa) presented by the Chancellor, Professor Vicki Sara to Christine Hughes, John's sister.

A few guest speakers were invited to talk about John's life. There were:

- Professor Tony Blake, the previous VIce-CHancellor of UTS, who was responsible for employing John in many of the multitude of senior roles John undertook in his career at UTS.

-Professor Sue Rowley, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) of UTS, who encouraged John to use his wonderful people skills in the development of research, particularly in the Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, of which he was Director, BUt also more widely throughout UTS.

- Mr Gerry Maynard, a long time friend of John who is also the Chair of the Accreditation and Appeals Assessment6 Board of the Australian Computer Society.

- Mr Phil Jacombs, one of John's early students starting at (the then) NSWIT iin 1977. His relationship with John continued long after graduation, developing far beyond lecturer into mentor and friend.
